New Video Details the Proper Application of Disconnect Switches

August 20, 2013

Mersen, formerly Ferraz Shawmut, recently partnered with ElectricSmarts to create a new video on the proper application of disconnect switches.

UL98 and UL508 are safety standards relating to disconnect switches, and this video clarifies the differences between the two. Panel builders will benefit from additional information on branch and feeder circuits, as well as background on service entrance spacing.

This new video is the part of the ElectricSmarts “Listen-n-Learn” Web TV series. This series features subject-matter experts sharing their knowledge, perspectives, and experience about topics related to the electrical industry. Mersen has partnered with ElectricSmarts on two previous BrainBank videos: Solar Power Circuit Protection, how Mersen products provide protection to ensure safety and reliability in solar power installations; and Surge Protection, with a focus on point of use, facility protection, and appropriate applications. The videos can be viewed on both the Mersen and ElectricSmarts websites.

“There is some confusion between UL98 and UL508 standards, which can lead to panels being rejected by an inspector during building or installation,” states Russ Bernstein, product manager, medium voltage fusegear and low-voltage switches. “Having a clear understanding of the standards relating to disconnect switches can prevent these costly safety violations.”
